Human Resources: A Career Series

Kyleigh Ing | 16 October 2022

In many modern sitcoms, human resources are often portrayed as the internal affairs councillor, solving disputes and drawing the paperwork for co-worker relationships. However, this is only a portion of what people working in human resources do. Their job is detrimental to keeping an organisation functional and productive.

To begin in HR, a bachelor’s degree must be obtained first. Many institutions offer bachelor programs in HR management, which is ideal if HR is the definite career one wishes to pursue. However, bachelor’s degrees in psychology, communications, analytics and finance will also provide the necessary qualifications to begin in HR while also having additional options open. Many positions will also require a candidate to have professional experiences which can be obtained by internships, part-time jobs or other relevant experiences. An HR worker may also choose to complete a variety of certificates including, HRCI Associate Professional in Human Resources, SHRM Certified Professional, Senior Certified Professional, to qualify them for promotions.

There are many jobs available in the field of HR with fair compensation.

It is said to be quite easy to get started in HR because many former experiences can be related to communications, social interaction or management. Networking is very important and can lead to a career without professional experience.

Human Resource workers are responsible for a variety of operations within a company including recruitment, training, payroll, internal affairs, updating policies and employee records. HR workers must always be up to date on the internal affairs within the organisation to determine if hiring is needed and to choose the right candidate for the position. Hiring is a complicated process as the market must be analysed, stakeholders must be consulted and the candidate’s salary has to align with the budget. Once a candidate is hired, they must onboard the new recruit and assimilate them to the position. Payroll is especially important as hours have to be logged, taxes deducted, distribution of reimbursement, bonuses and raises are all responsibilities of HR. Disciplinary action also falls under human resources roles. They will also keep a record of their employees ensuring that all information is up to date and accurate. Employee records include personal information, emergency contacts, performance and demographics.

As seen from the responsibilities listed above, there is no average work day for someone working in HR. There are a variety of things they may accomplish in one day, keeping the job interesting and less tedious. There is also more flexibility available as many of their roles are able to be completed virtually. This job also has much prospect for promotions that also comes with a large increase in salary.

There are many opportunities to jump into human resources and it can be easy to do so by networking with industry professionals. Their jobs are usually low stress positions offering the work-life balance that is always wanted. It is a thriving field of business that is only expected to grow because of how detrimental it is to the workforce.
