How to Maintain a Good Work/Life Balance

By: Alimah Fagbenro

Employment is a significant aspect of our lives, but is it worth sacrificing your personal life in a major way? Family commitments remain unfulfilled because it is popularly believed that increased job hours improve productivity. There are multiple ways to specifically improve time for your personal life without sacrificing work quality.

One of the essential skills necessary is setting boundaries. Communication is necessary between colleagues on how increased hours and responsibilities interfere with personal commitments, which is significant. You can suggest alternative dates or seek assistance from a coworker regarding completing objectives. The flexibility allows the ability to expand the assignment throughout the week, rather than cramming it into a small time slot in a big way. A flexible schedule reduces stress by providing more opportunities for hobbies and self-care. Flexibility builds productivity with less burnout and increases motivation.

Flexibility is difficult for some, but you need bot remain self-disciplined with your schedule. If you are working longer hours, in an attempt to improve productivity, you need to self-reflect and take accountability that you may be a procrastinator. You should develop strategies that keep you focused on assignments, such as subtly eliminating any distractions or technology. Prevent yourself from working off the clock by being self-disciplined. Covid influenced many people's mindsets, with the line between work and personal life blurred. The strong urge of responding to work emails in your spare time is very prominent, especially if it is from your supervisor; but responding to these emails after hours will harm your health. There are numerous studies that, for the most part, demonstrate how employees replying during their free time will reduce their sleep and increase anxiety, which is substantial. These effects put you in a professional frame of mind, keeping you active but now preventing you from being relaxed in your spare time. A great communicative relationship with other colleagues is important, but it shouldn't be on the account of your mindset. A great physical or emotional well-being will specifically lead to a healthy workplace.

Working from home shouldn’t be discouraging; this may be a better alternative for others. The environment could be the prime factor for your stress; working in a more comfortable atmosphere may encourage productivity, but you should consider some factors that will keep you focused; you should still be assertive and professional; wear more formal clothes and choose an environment that does not encourage relaxing. An office in your house is ideal, but any location without a bed and a couch would be wise.

A healthy work environment requires good mental health. Before accepting assignments, consider whether they add to your stress level or if they overlap with self-care in a big way. Self-care is key for maintaining work objectives and remaining active throughout the day. A proper self-care routine develops through hobbies or setting goals. Hobbies are a great way to stay productive, boost your attitude, and engage in productive activity. These elements will improve workflow as they will maintain your quality of work in a generally major way.
