An Insight to Google Certificates

Kyleigh Ing | 14 October 2022

As the technology industry continues to thrive and grow, Google has responded by providing certifications for in-demand jobs. This program makes education more accessible to eager learners. The courses are offered through Coursera, a partner of Google, and costs $39 per month. Certifications are offered in IT support, data analytics, digital marketing and e-commerce, project management and UX design.

Google advertises their certificates as being recognized by many employers and can grant you the fundamentals necessary for the chosen career. This is a remote opportunity that can be completed in accordance with your own schedule. The certificates are usually completed within three to six months, and since the fee is monthly, it is suitable for students on a budget. A prerequisite is not required to enroll in the course, so anyone can complete it. In addition, the certification also provides opportunities to network and be mentored by industry professionals. Resume building, coaching in job searches, and practice interviews are also included within the curriculum.

Although Google certificates serve as an efficient and beneficial qualification on a resume, there are some downfalls. Since it is so easily accessible and the evaluations can be retaken, employers may not see this as a large accomplishment compared to a relevant bachelor's degree from an accredited institution. Furthermore, these certifications cover a broad range of information which helps to set the foundation but does not divulge deeply into certain aspects that may be important for the position. Since the certification is meant to be achieved in 3-6 months with less than 10 hours of study a week, it does not compensate for a three or four-year bachelor’s degree. Many employers will also consider a candidate’s portfolio and experience rather than a single certificate.

There are many benefits to obtaining a Google certificate and is ideal for people with determination and discipline. This can help further a career, or get started in one, but should be complementary to the resume instead of being solely relied on. The Google certificate can grant many opportunities and experiences that can kick-start your career.
