Indra Nooyi

Who was she?

Nooyi is a business executive who was the chief executive for Pepsi Co. She’s very
successful with incessant appearances in the world’s 100 most powerful women the
highest being 13. Indra Nooyi has many successes and awards, but let’s start from the
beginning.
She was born in October 1955 in Tamil Nadu, India. Her mother was strict in
enforcing confidence in her daughters to encourage them to be as powerful as a
president or prime minister. She got her bachelor’s degree in physics, chemistry, and
math from Madras Chris College of the University of Madras in 1975. Nooyi then
moved to the United States and attended Yale School of Management for a master’s
degree in public and private management in 1980. Her profession started while she
was still in India holding a product manager role at Johnson & Johnson. She was
involved in an internship for Booz Allen Hamilton while attending Yale. Then Indra
joined the Boston Consulting Group for strategic consulting and became a vice
president and director for Motorola, following PepsiCo.
She joined PepsiCo as strategic planning in 1994 and became a CEO in 12 years
in replacement of Steven Reinemud, Nooyi started as a senior vice president for
corporate strategy and development from 1996 to 2000 and then served as a senior
vice president and chief financial officer until 2006. PepsiCo was led strongly by her

guidance and merged with Quaker Oats Company. The company’s ownership of
Gatorade helped give them leverage, including Coco-Cola, which owns Powerade.
This strategy helped increase the net profit from $2.7 billion to $6.5 billion.
This quickly grew her name and increasingly showed in many articles like the
Wall Street Journal list of 50 women to watch and 10 most influential people in Time.
PepsiCo was now on a constant rise in growth throughout society. She revamped
Pepsi to be more healthy and enforced an
environmental campaign called Performance With A
Purpose that revolved around sustainability. Their
changed packaging helped reduce waste, conserve more
water, and change to renewable energy. Performance
with a Purpose created a comfortable environment for
workers and they began personalizing products for
women. She stepped down in August 2018 after being a CEO for 12 years.
Throughout her years as CEO, she managed to earn $17 million.
She then went on to be a co-director for the Connecticut Economic Resource
Center, which helped develop a plan for the state’s new economic development
strategy with the help of the Connecticut Department of Economic and Community
Development. She also participated in different associations during her tenure, like a
board of directors at Amazon and a council member for MIT’s School of Engineering.
She’s married to Raj K. Nooyi and has two daughters, which even got her a third spot
on the “World’s Powerful Moms List”. Indra Nooyi made a permanent example for
women in business.
